You can split this walk into 4 sections really (1) North Road between Newbridge and Crumlin - a typical valleys walk urban walk, (2) The closed road between Crumlin and Llanhilleth, (3) The cycle track between Llanhilleth and Aberbeeg and (4) the former railway line path between Aberbeeg and Abertillery. Photo 1 - The road between Crumlin and Llanhilleth (closed to traffic) Photo 5 - The railway line path between Aberbeeg and Abertillery...

There were around 5 sections where the footpath was either overgrown, just disappeared into nothing or access just wasn`t there. I will propose an alternative, but it will probably involve a lot of lane walking, as I`m not seeing an easy way around some of the troublesome sections! The green lane leaving Abersychan down to Gypsy Lane...

There are some lovely views over Cwmbran and the Lloyd Valley and beyond at several points on the way up the slopes of Mynydd Maen. Photo 1 - View over Cwmbran from the path leading up off Graig Road...

Walk this routeMost of the paths are well trodden though and over the mountain top, it`s just a matter of taking a path as close as possible to the forestry land, while staying on the open moors....

After crossing Blackwood High Street and leaving behind the hussle and bustle of the town, the path crosses the River Sirhowy (Photo 1) and passes through a housing estate, before crossing the A4048 road (take care here as there is no dedicated crossing place). The walk through these lanes gives some lovely views across the fields to Pentwynmawr and Newbridge (Photo 4), The path then crosses more fields (Photo 5), before descending into the top end of Newbridge....

Half of it is on the lanes and footpaths between Newbridge High Street and the dual carriageway by-pass road, the other half along the main road between Pentwynmawr and Pontllanfraith. The path then runs through some woodland (Photo 2), fields and more woodland before emerging in a small car park (Photo 3), from which it`s just a short hop to the High Street at Pentwynmawr. From there, it`s a straightforward walk along the main road all the way to the cross roads at Pontllanfraith (Photo 4)...

This is a great route that's mostly away from the road, easy to follow and surrounded by trees. Walking on the path along the B4471 was fun below Llanhilleth, with the road at tree canopy height....

Walk this routeI'm also going to suggest a route that makes use of the old lane that hugs the woodland, as I reckon that is a good option for someone to check....

When I walked this route it included some challenges, including long nettles, long grass and some large fallen trees over the path. That all said, I really enjoyed walking the route. I'll be sharing an alternative that hugs the tree-line at the bottom of the hill....

At the time of my review I found the woodland north of Trinant difficult as it was very overgrown and the path was far from clear. It is possible. However an option might be to take the B road through Cwm Nant Gwynt to avoid the woodland....

A nice enough route, easy to follow with a pleasant woodside walk over the hill. Good views....

This is a nice steady walk, gradually downhill all the way to Aberbeeg, with the river Ebbw Fach on the right and the "old" road up above on the left beyond the trees. At Aberbeeg, the path goes under the railway bridge then immediately over the Ebbw River (just downstream from the confluence of the Ebbw Fach and the Ebbw Fawr) before passing under the main A467 road. The it`s a bit of a slog uphill on Pant Ddu Road, before turning left just before the road bends around to Aberbeeg church. Then it was just a matter of walking along Park Road into Newbridge and down through the park to the station....

One of the places where it was clear was on walking down Blaendare Road on the outskirts of Pontypool, where the signed footpath is totally blocked (after the college and short row of houses, but before the school grounds start)....

The area around Mynydd Maen was also a bit confusing, but with good visibility and a map I soon found the well-used paths overlooking Cwmbran....
